Dorchelle struggled with unemployment for years prior to finding a job. Below, she shares her journey and how Catholic Charities helped her find not just a job, but stability.

Dorchelle, tell us about your experience with Catholic Charities. My case manager referred me to the Job Developer at Catholic Charities. I met with him several times before I was ready to interview. He helped me with my resume and asked me about the types of jobs I was looking for.  Then, we practiced my interview skills.

How long had you been unemployed before your current position? I had not worked in three years. It was a good decision and time to go back to work.

How did you find your employer? Together we sent my resume to a couple places. I was then offered an interview. I called the Job Developer and we practiced how the interview may go so that I would be prepared.

What was the interview process like?
They called me for two in-person interviews. The Job Developer gave me a ride to one of the interviews and supplied me with bus passes.

What was it like when you got the call for a job offer?
I was happy because I liked the company and the coworkers I met. Plus, it was work I knew how to do.

What changes have occurred due to you working?
I have become a lot more sure of myself and my future. It feels great being able to purchase necessities without worrying so much about the cost. When you make your own money and can buy things for yourself, or your kids, it’s different and better. I’m even looking at going back to college next year. I might not be able to hang out with friends and family as much, but working has allowed me to do new things with them.

Is there anything you are able to do now that you’re working that you weren’t able to do in the past?
Yes - A few weeks ago, I went on my first vacation in many years to Wisconsin Dells. For my youngest, this was only his second real vacation ever.

How has Catholic Charities helped you become successful at your job?
The Job Developer has stayed in touch with me to make sure I have had no issues at work. He has given me a ride and picked me up from work several times. Also, I received a Target gift card since I needed to purchase black shoes and pants for work. They have also assisted me by giving me bus passes since I commute one hour to work each day and have to take two buses. The team at Catholic Charities has been great!
